'And this is a thought'

                                  CHAPTER 3

The dresses were extravagant. All the women invited wore gowns with silk and ribbons and sequins and ruffles. Their shoes looked painfully uncomfortable, yet stylish. The heels came in all shades of blue, red, pink, and even yellow. One dress you particularly enjoyed swishing around the dining room and such was a pale yellow dress black ruffles and yellow heels.

You helped out in the kitchen; you brought the empty dishes in and replaced them with new, clean, full ones. The food smelt delicious as silver tray after silver tray was passed on your hands to tables and anxious, gloved hands.

You snuck a bite of cheesecake and shoved the small portion into your mouth and swallowed quickly. How that butler managed to prepare all this food was beyond you, but you didn't care. The cake was soft and spongy with the right blend of chocolate and cheese.

Across the room, as you swallowed the miniscule slice of cake, you made eye contact with Ciel. Your eyes went wide and he chuckled lightly, then his attention was grabbed by another guest, a man in a gray suit and top hat.

You shook your head, nothing got by the extravagant staff in this household. You tried to skip a window when cleaning in the dining room and Sebastian caught you right away. It was quite embarrassing but you had found that Mey Rin had tried this on day one as well. You all laughed about it later, and especially about how red your face became!

As it reached the third hour of the party, all the dresses looked the same. All the colors blended together in a mash of what appeared to be too much. Person after person bumped into you, and it was obnoxious. That's when the music began.

Ciel walked with Sebastian and looked about the crowd. He was dressed in rich purple and raven black clothing. He stood and took his violin (maybe it was a viola?) and set his music up.

"As of popular request by almost all of you, I have decided to play a musical piece," Ciel announced in a voice that demanded all eyes, all attention, and certainly all thoughts to be of him. He placed the bow in one hand and the instrument in the other. It rested delicately on his shoulder.

Sebastian set out the music on the stand and stepped back, he seemingly disappeared into the shadows.  The crowd clapped softly in respect and suddenly all was quiet again. Across the room you saw Finnian also passing out foods, Bard was supposedly in the kitchen, and Mey Rin was sent to do other things because of her clumsiness.

You held your breath as Ciel raised the bow and ran it across the strings. The instrument (definitely a violin) played a harmonious note. But that was the only slow note; the song was quick, like the blink of an eye. Notes were being played like there was no tomorrow and the sound was accurate, beautiful, and well tuned. You recognized the piece to be "Dark Hollow", because you used to play it with your mother.

Your mother was a fantastic violinist. She played the flute and cello as well and was magnificent. So good in fact, that it was actually her job. Your mother used to go from mansion to mansion during the day and teach young earls and viscounts and such how to play various instruments.

You knew how to play all three. Maybe not as well as your beloved mom, but you were good. Yu could still remember the scent of her jasmine perfume and a blue dress she wore so often because it was a gift from your Grandfather. You remember sparkling eyes and white teeth, a gentle, soothing voice. So many senses were rolling through your memories and you almost began crying right there. You missed her.

The music stopped and the memories slowly dissipated. You clapped along with everyone else (As well as someone could clap with a tray in the hands). Ciel bowed and smiled, but not from delight, but from pride. The prideful feeling of knowing no one could match his skills, even though most of the rich people in the room were much older than he.

So the party went back to being a party and Sebastian went back to playing the violin. He was superb as well; he played more fluid, legato pieces to sooth the tone and mood of the evening. You spun on your heel to return back to the kitchen to refill the wine glasses on your plate when you slammed right into a lady!

She screamed shrilly and looked down at you. Her brunette cork-screw curls bounced and her green eyes flashed darkly in anger.

"How dare you!" A robust man from next to her bellowed. He appeared to be her husband and he looked even madder.

"Do you know how expensive her dress was? How much effort it takes to make one of them?-Or are you simply that dull, you piece of rubbish!" The man yelled. You stood there stock still and stared.

It was night two in the mansion and already you pissed off a man of status and his wife. The wife opened her pink lips to probably let out another string of insults but didn't get half the chance. A slightly taller figure was in front of you in a purple dress jacket.

"That will be enough," Ciel said calmly, he kept both his arms by his side.

"Well, Phantomhive, I expected you to have better staff employed." The man responded angrily, he gave you a dirty look again and you averted his gaze. Ciel looked back at you and saw you do this.

"It is none of your business who I choose to employ. It was an accident, if anything I will pay you back for the dress." Ciel said stoic as ever because that was the only proper thing to do. You stood there shocked, that dress must have cost hundreds and now because of your own clumsiness, Ciel was going to buy this bitch a new one.

"But if I may have my butler escort you and your wife out."

"Out?" The man questioned.

"Yes, out, as in you are leaving. I do not need people with short tempers attending my parties. They are for enjoyment and business, not for nitpicking my choosing skills."

"You can't just-"

"Actually I can, seeing as this is MY manor and if you want to keep the deal our businesses have made you had better walk fast." Ciel bit back. He was now standing next to you.

The man's large face grew red, "You can't treat me like that, you're just a mere boy!"

Ciel chuckled and smiled widely. "Sebastian?" The butler was near the two of you in seconds,

"Yes, milord." And with that the protesting man left the dining room with his rude wife. You stood there as everyone stared at you and the Earl. Ciel turned to you and nodded heading back into the heart of the party. People still gave you odd glanced but you ignored them, keeping your head high.

Later that night you also met one of your family's acquaintances. It was Charles Dove, someone that helped your father out when he couldn't afford even the smallest, oldest, loaf of bread for you and your brother.

"___!!?" Did I mention he's very outgoing and happy-go-lucky to you yet? He pushed his way through the crowd and gave you a large hug.

"What in the world are you doing in a place like this!?" He questioned gesturing around to the party, people, and mansion.

"I was taken in." You replied smiling happily.

"Well good for you! How's father faring? Well, I would suppose, I mean look at this manor, is Ciel paying for his medicinal treatments and food? This manor is one of the nicest in England, it's so large and the staff are great."

"Why thank you, we try our hardest here at the Phantomhive manor to please any and all guests." Sebastian said sneaking up on your conversation.

Charles seemed not to mind and accepted the bow he was presented with. The two idly chatted about comparisons of the manor for a bit. You eventually descended away into the dancing crowd of people. You finally found yourself staring at Ciel who was acting as a wall flower.

He stood with one leg against the wall the other supporting his body on the ground. His arms were crossed over her chest and his eyes scanned the crowd in a disdainful way. His lips though were curved in a smile as he noticed that his party was going by well.

You suddenly found yourself making your way over to talk to him, if only for a quick second.

"Thank you for defending me earlier, milord." You said humbly when he acknowledged your presence.

Ciel shook his head, dark locks swishing from side to side "Don't worry about it. I don't let anyone insult what is mine."

You snickered, "I may work for you, but I'm not 'yours'."

Ciel's grin became cynical, "Anything in this mansion is mine. Everything here is a pawn and I am the one to move them in the correct plays in order to win. Whatever way that may be, the pawns are always owned by the player, and I am the player with many, many pawns to use."

"That may be, but sometimes the pawns move in different directions."

"Luckily, real pawns can't move on their own."

The two of you stood in silence as you glanced at the poofy gowns and handsome suits. You were the first to break the silence again.

"So what exactly is this party for?"

Ciel skimmed the crowd for what seemed the millionth time to you, "Just for everyone to be more acquainted. I was going to do some business with that man who had been so rude to you, but I do not do business with those who do not deserve to increase my fortune."

"That's a pretty cocky attitude, claiming people need to have the right to help you." You responded skeptically. You your entire life had grown up knowing that money was money no matter from who or where.

And here your new master acted like he owned everything, as if he were the son of Her Majesty! You suddenly found yourself questioning who Ciel Phantomhive was really. Sure he was the owner of a successful business and a parent-less teen, yet you didn't know of any of his hobbies nor enjoyments.

From what you understood money, the queen, and status were at the top of his list of importance. He seemingly also cared about his employed people, yet that didn't show character it. It showed power and will and strength, but those were only traits in what one person really was.

Right then and there, glancing at the young earl who was still older and taller than you by a little, you promised you would do all you could to learn more of Ciel. You wanted to know his favorite and least favorite things. You wanted to know where the perfect and mysterious butler Sebastian came from. What did it mean to be Ciel Phantomhive and how could you worm yourself to be on his list of importance?

And why did it matter so much to you? He was your lord and as long as you carried out his orders you would have food and a roof over your head. Yet, your curiosity was gnawing at you, and you needed to know. You had to know everything about Ciel.

"Excuse me ____ and young master but I have a private letter from the Queen for you," Ciel glanced and said good bye to you as he followed his butler to a corner of the room.

You were called back into the kitchen to help Bard and Finnian take out more delicacies.

On the empty side of the room Ciel and Sebastian talked in quiet voices.

"More kidnappings, how pitiful," Ciel droned as he opened up the wax sealed envelope.

Sebastian frowned, "Included are a list of the people who were kidnapped as of recent. All of which are young boys."

Ciel read over the list and narrowed his eye, "How is this list important at the moment?"

"___'s young brother was taken as well." Sebastian responded with a sympathetic look in his eye.

"You're not suggesting…"

"Oh but I am young master."

"Sebastian! You cannot be serious, she is a girl. She can't help with a case for Her Majesty!" Ciel said angrily.

"When you get angry you look more like a child."

"Do not call me a child!" Ciel replied just as angry.

Sebastian sighed again but pressed on, "We should tell ___ about this and also receive her help. If she feels the need to find her brother she will work faster. Plus she can speak to animals."

"Unless the animals are kidnapping the children, why do they matter?" Ciel asked sarcastically. He took a seat in a nearby red chair. His loyal butler stood to the side of the chair pretending to be nonchalantly telling his master of some unimportant affair.

"How often do kidnappers and killers kill the animals near the scene as well?"

"You're a demon! I don't need some girl's help," Ciel said just as stubbornly. He scouted for you in the mash of people. Finally capturing your image he watched as you made your way somewhat clumsily around the people and passed out drinks and food.

Sebastian sighed, "Young master please listen to me, she will be of use and she deserves to know."

Ciel finally gave in with a dissatisfied look plastered onto his features. When had his butler ever been wrong? His blue eye held a storm that was ready to lash at anyone who dared anger or deify him. He crossed his arms once more over his chest and stood walking back into the crowd to mingle with his happy and satisfied guests.

"We tell ___ tomorrow." And with that the Earl disappeared into the crowd and left a smiling Sebastian.
